Talks Underway in Somalia as Opposition and International Community Push for Political Agreement

MOGADISHU — Political consultations involving Somalia’s opposition leaders, federal government representatives, and international partners are continuing in Mogadishu, as diplomatic efforts intensify to bridge deepening political divisions and secure a broad-based political agreement, sources familiar with the discussions said.

The meetings, held over several days, are part of a coordinated mediation initiative led by international stakeholders, aimed at preventing a prolonged political stalemate that could affect governance, security coordination, and preparations for future electoral processes.

According to participants, the talks have centered on several contentious issues, including the structure of the electoral system, the distribution of political authority between federal and regional administrations, and the implementation of previously signed agreements that have remained partially unfulfilled.

International partners involved in the discussions are reportedly urging both sides to show flexibility and prioritize consensus-building, warning that continued political fragmentation could undermine ongoing state-building efforts and donor support.

Opposition figures have reiterated their call for what they describe as a more inclusive and transparent political process, insisting on stronger guarantees for electoral credibility, institutional balance, and fair representation.

Officials from Villa Somalia, meanwhile, have emphasized the need to preserve political stability and ensure continuity in state institutions, arguing that abrupt changes to the current framework could create governance uncertainty.

Security officials have not reported any incidents linked to the talks, which are being held under heightened political sensitivity amid growing public debate over Somalia’s political direction.

Although no formal breakthrough has been announced, sources say discussions remain “constructive” and are expected to continue in the coming days as mediators work to narrow remaining differences and build trust between the two sides.

Neither the Federal Government of Somalia nor opposition leaders have issued official public statements regarding the ongoing negotiations, and it remains unclear when or whether a final agreement could be reached.
