Dar es Salaam — Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced a fresh investigation into the violence that erupted during and after the country’s October 2025 general election, with the aim of determining who organised, participated in and financed the unrest.
The new six-member commission follows an earlier government-appointed inquiry, which reported that at least 518 people were killed during and after the election. While the previous inquiry did not identify those responsible, it recommended a criminal investigation to establish the main perpetrators and determine accountability.
President Samia said the new commission has initially been given five months to complete its investigation and submit its findings. The period could be extended if investigators require additional time to complete their work.
In an effort to strengthen the credibility and independence of the investigation, the commission includes judges from Uganda and Namibia, bringing regional perspectives to the process.
President Samia has urged Tanzanians to cooperate fully with the commission and allow investigators to carry out their responsibilities without interference.
The fresh investigation could become a significant step toward establishing responsibility for the deadly post-election unrest and determining whether individuals or groups coordinated or financed the violence.
Its findings could also have broader implications for accountability, political stability, national reconciliation and public confidence in Tanzania’s electoral and justice systems.
The investigation comes as Tanzania continues to face scrutiny over the events surrounding the 2025 election and the government’s handling of the subsequent unrest.
