KIGOMA — Tanzania has officially begun construction of the sixth section of its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), marking a major step in expanding the country’s modern rail network.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday laid the foundation stone for the Tabora–Kigoma railway section at Katosho in Kigoma Region, signaling the start of a major infrastructure project aimed at improving transport links in western Tanzania.
The new SGR extension is expected to strengthen trade connections, reduce transportation costs, and improve the movement of passengers and goods between Kigoma, central Tanzania, and regional markets.
Government officials said the project will play a key role in boosting economic activity by connecting landlocked areas to major transport corridors and supporting sectors such as agriculture, mining, and commerce.
The Tabora–Kigoma section is part of Tanzania’s broader plan to develop a nationwide electric Standard Gauge Railway network, replacing older rail infrastructure and creating faster, more reliable transport services.
President Samia’s administration has identified infrastructure development as a key driver of economic growth, with railway expansion among the government’s priority projects to enhance regional connectivity and attract investment.
The launch comes as Tanzania continues efforts to position itself as a regional transport hub linking East and Central Africa through modern rail and road networks.
