ADDIS ABABA — Tigrayan authorities have accused the African Union (AU) of failing to ensure the implementation of the November 2022 Pretoria peace agreement, shortly after the bloc called for “utmost restraint” and an immediate de-escalation amid renewed military tensions in northern Ethiopia.
The AU expressed concern over reports that Tigrayan forces had seized civilian airports and over escalating hostilities in Tigray and Afar regions.
In response, the Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau said the regional government had repeatedly appealed to the AU to intervene but that its requests had gone unanswered.
Tigrayan authorities argued that the Pretoria agreement was intended to establish a framework for ending the conflict and addressing outstanding political and security issues. They accused the AU of failing to take sufficient action to ensure that the commitments made under the agreement were implemented.
The renewed tensions have raised concerns over the stability of northern Ethiopia, where the 2020–2022 war between the federal government and Tigrayan forces caused widespread displacement and a major humanitarian crisis.
The AU has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalation and resolve outstanding disputes through dialogue and the existing peace framework.
The latest developments come as tensions increase across parts of Tigray and neighbouring Afar, with concerns that further military confrontation could undermine the Pretoria peace process.
