Turkey boosts Somalia’s naval capacity and readiness

MOGADISHU — Turkish naval task force units operating off the coast of Somalia have continued to provide security and operational support for offshore energy activities, including the protection of drilling vessel Çağrı Bey drilling ship and its accompanying support ships Korkut support vessel, Altan support vessel and Sancar support vessel.

Officials said the mission forms part of broader maritime cooperation between Turkey and Somalia, aimed at safeguarding strategic infrastructure and ensuring secure conditions for offshore exploration activities in Somali waters.

The naval deployment has also been supporting capacity-building efforts for Somalia’s maritime forces. As part of the ongoing operation, trainees from the Turkish Military Training School in Somalia have taken part in practical sessions at sea, receiving instruction in basic seamanship, navigation, and maritime safety procedures.

According to military sources, the training programme is designed to strengthen the operational readiness of Somali naval personnel and improve their ability to secure territorial waters against threats such as piracy, illegal fishing and trafficking.

Turkey has been a key partner in rebuilding Somalia’s security sector, providing training, equipment and technical assistance to both land and maritime forces. The maritime initiative is seen as a critical component of efforts to enhance Somalia’s sovereignty over its coastal resources and expand its capacity to benefit from offshore energy development.

The latest activities highlight Ankara’s growing role in Somalia’s security and economic landscape, particularly in areas linked to defence cooperation and natural resource protection.
