MONTREAL, (HAN) — A senior U.S. adviser on African affairs has delivered a blunt message to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, stressing that Somalia cannot defeat terrorism without political unity, and cautioning that U.S. support may not continue if internal divisions persist.

According to diplomatic sources, the warning underscores Washington’s growing concerns over political rifts in Mogadishu, which officials fear could undermine the country’s counterterrorism campaign against al-Shabaab. The United States has long been a key partner for Somalia, providing military, security, and development assistance.

The U.S. envoy’s remarks highlighted the need for Somali leaders to reach consensus and build inclusive political agreements in order to stabilize the country and strengthen governance. “Support cannot be sustained in the absence of unity,” the adviser told the president, according to sources familiar with the talks.
In contrast, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s meeting with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh was described as cordial and constructive. Both leaders emphasized closer cooperation and a shared vision for regional stability, officials said.
Analysts note that the U.S. message signals a clear expectation: Somali leaders must resolve internal disputes if they wish to maintain vital international backing in their fight against extremism.
