ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates has accelerated efforts to restore diplomatic and economic relations with Iran, signaling a significant shift toward regional de-escalation following months of heightened tensions and conflict in the Gulf.
According to the Financial Times, maritime trade between Dubai and Iranian ports has resumed after being disrupted by the recent crisis, while direct commercial flights between the two countries have also restarted, reopening key transport and business links.
The report said the UAE has authorized the return of thousands of Iranian nationals who had previously left the Emirates during the conflict, allowing many families and business owners to resume their lives and commercial activities in the country.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has reportedly assigned senior officials, including National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to oversee efforts aimed at rebuilding ties with Tehran and expanding diplomatic engagement.
The renewed outreach is expected to focus on restoring trade, investment and commercial cooperation while reducing tensions that have disrupted regional shipping, aviation and financial markets.
Analysts say the UAE’s decision reflects its long-standing strategy of balancing strong security partnerships with Western allies while maintaining practical economic relations with neighboring countries, including Iran.
Iran has historically been one of the UAE’s largest regional trading partners, with Dubai serving as a major commercial gateway for Iranian businesses. The restoration of shipping routes and direct flights is expected to boost bilateral trade, facilitate the movement of goods and travelers, and strengthen economic activity across the Gulf.
The diplomatic thaw also comes as regional governments increasingly seek dialogue to reduce the risk of further military confrontation following months of instability involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
Observers say improved relations between Abu Dhabi and Tehran could contribute to broader efforts to enhance Gulf security, protect vital maritime trade routes and support stability in one of the world’s most strategically important energy-producing regions.
