MOGADISHU, (HAN) — Somalia’s Minister of Defense, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, together with the Chief of Defense Forces, General Odawa Yusuf Rage, on Tuesday attended a ceremony in Mogadishu where the United Kingdom formally handed over modern vehicles and equipment designed to counter improvised explosive devices (C-IED).

The equipment was officially presented to the Somali National Army’s Engineering Corps (Ururka Sancada) by the British Ambassador to Somalia, Charles King.

Speaking at the event, Minister Fiqi said the new equipment reflects the UK’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the capabilities and professionalism of the Somali National Army (SNA). He emphasized that the donation would significantly enhance the safety and effectiveness of operations against terrorist groups.

“This advanced equipment will greatly improve the ability of our forces to detect and neutralize explosive threats, making our operations more secure and efficient in the fight against terrorism,” Minister Fiqi stated.

He further thanked the United Kingdom for its strategic support to Somalia, noting that the partnership remains vital to the country’s long-term goals of peace, stability, and sustainable development.

General Odawa also welcomed the assistance, describing it as a crucial boost to frontline units regularly exposed to improvised explosive device threats in their counter-insurgency operations.

The United Kingdom has been a consistent supporter of Somalia’s security sector reform, training programs, and stabilization efforts. Analysts say the latest C-IED support package underscores London’s role as one of Somalia’s most important international security partners.
