MOGADISHU – The United Kingdom has expressed concern over the overnight clashes in Mogadishu, urging all Somali stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint and pursue peaceful dialogue to address political and security tensions.
In a statement, the UK called on all parties involved to avoid actions that could further escalate the situation and undermine stability in the Somali capital. The British government emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through inclusive dialogue and cooperation rather than violence.
“The United Kingdom is concerned by the overnight clashes in Mogadishu. We call on all Somali parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians, and engage in inclusive dialogue to resolve tensions peacefully,” the statement said.
The UK reiterated its support for Somalia’s peacebuilding and state-building efforts, stressing that political disagreements should be addressed through democratic institutions and constructive engagement. It also underscored the need to safeguard recent gains in security, governance, and national reconciliation.
The clashes, which erupted in several areas of Mogadishu, raised concerns among residents and the international community, with reports of civilian displacement and disruption to daily life. Witnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire in parts of the city, while some families temporarily fled affected neighborhoods seeking safer locations. Local authorities have been assessing the impact of the violence and monitoring the security situation.
Regional and international partners have increasingly urged Somali leaders to prioritize dialogue and unity amid ongoing political challenges. Diplomatic observers have warned that prolonged instability could hinder ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions, improve security coordination, and advance development initiatives across the country.
The UK remains a key international partner of Somalia, supporting efforts to strengthen security, democratic governance, and economic development. British officials said continued cooperation among Somali stakeholders is essential to maintaining stability and advancing the country’s long-term peace and development goals. The UK has also worked closely with Somalia through humanitarian assistance, capacity-building programs, and support for reforms aimed at promoting accountable governance and sustainable peace.
