MOGADISHU — Ukraine has sent formal congratulations to Somalia on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of its independence, marking the historic events of July 1, 1960, when the former Italian-administered territory of Somalia gained independence and later united with British Somaliland to form the Somali Republic.
In a statement released by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kyiv praised Somalia’s statehood journey and reiterated its strong support for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence. The Ukrainian government said it views respect for international law and national self-determination as shared principles guiding relations between states.
The statement emphasized that Ukraine “stands in solidarity with Somalia” and supports ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions, governance systems and diplomatic cooperation. Kyiv said it is committed to expanding practical cooperation with Mogadishu in areas including public administration, capacity building, education, agriculture, and economic development.
Ukraine also highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral relations at a time when global challenges require closer international partnerships, especially among countries facing security and development pressures.
The message of congratulations comes as Ukraine continues to face a prolonged war following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Kyiv has increasingly framed its foreign policy messaging around sovereignty, territorial integrity, and resistance to external aggression, drawing parallels with other states’ experiences in defending national independence.
In recent months, Somalia and Ukraine have expanded diplomatic engagement, including discussions and agreements aimed at deepening cooperation in governance reform, institutional development, agricultural support, and knowledge exchange. Officials from both sides say these initiatives are intended to open a new phase in bilateral relations.
Ukraine extended its greetings to the Somali government and people, wishing them continued peace, stability, and long-term development.
July 1 remains one of Somalia’s most significant national holidays, commemorating the formation of the Somali Republic in 1960 following the union of the two formerly separate colonial territories under British and Italian rule.
