MOGADISHU — The United States has appointed career diplomat Ruth Anne Stevens-Klitz as its new Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) in Somalia, with her assignment in Mogadishu beginning in August 2026.

Stevens-Klitz brings more than two decades of diplomatic experience, with a career spanning Africa, the Middle East and Europe. She has served in several U.S. diplomatic missions and held positions involving public diplomacy, political affairs and engagement with governments and civil society.

Before taking up her new assignment in Somalia, Stevens-Klitz served as a Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Dakar, where she covered Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. Her work included public diplomacy, media engagement, education, cultural affairs and outreach to local institutions.

She has also served in diplomatic assignments involving Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, Germany, Israel and Armenia, as well as holding positions at the U.S. Department of State in Washington.

Her professional experience includes developing relationships with government officials, international organizations, businesses and civil society groups. She has also worked on issues involving youth, economic opportunities, media freedom and cultural heritage.

Her appointment comes as U.S.-Somalia relations remain focused on security, governance, development and regional stability. Washington has been an important international partner in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its security institutions and combat militant groups.

As Deputy Chief of Mission, Stevens-Klitz will be one of the senior officials at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Mogadishu. She will work alongside the U.S. ambassador and engage with Somali government institutions, international partners and other stakeholders.

Her extensive experience in Africa could be particularly relevant as Somalia continues efforts to strengthen state institutions, improve security and expand international partnerships.

Her background in public diplomacy may also support greater engagement between the U.S. mission and Somali communities, media organizations, young people and civil society.

The appointment comes at a significant period for Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa, where security, political stability and regional cooperation remain major priorities.

Stevens-Klitz’s arrival in Mogadishu is expected to add further diplomatic experience to the U.S. mission as Washington and Mogadishu continue to strengthen cooperation on issues of mutual interest.

Her appointment underscores the strategic importance Washington places on its relationship with Somalia and its broader engagement in the Horn of Africa.
