WASHINGTON – The United States has reiterated its firm position on Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including the region of Somaliland, dismissing speculation that it might be considering recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.

In a statement to Fox News, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State made clear that Washington fully recognizes the independence and borders of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which include Somaliland.

“The United States fully recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which encompasses Somaliland,” the spokesperson said. “At present, the Department of State is not engaged in any formal discussions with representatives of Somaliland regarding recognition as an independent country.”

The clarification comes amid growing debate in the Horn of Africa, where Somaliland has continued its push for international recognition since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. Despite running its own government, military, and institutions, no country has formally recognized Somaliland’s independence.

Analysts view Washington’s statement as a significant diplomatic signal of continued U.S. support for Mogadishu, as Somalia grapples with complex security, political, and climate-related challenges. It also reinforces America’s commitment to Somalia’s federal government, which insists that Somaliland remains an integral part of its territory.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has publicly advocated for Somaliland’s recognition as an independent state. His stance has sparked criticism among Somali officials and commentators, who argue that Somalia’s unity is non-negotiable and no foreign government or individual has the power to divide the country.
