WFP Warns Sudan Faces Deepening Hunger Crisis Amid War, Aid Cuts and Rising Food Costs

0

KHARTOUM – Sudan is facing a worsening hunger crisis as ongoing conflict, reductions in international aid funding, and rising agricultural costs threaten food security across the country, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned.

According to the WFP, millions of Sudanese are struggling to access adequate food as the war continues to disrupt farming, trade routes, and humanitarian operations. The agency cautioned that the situation could deteriorate further unless urgent action is taken to support vulnerable communities and sustain relief efforts.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has displaced millions of people and devastated large areas of agricultural land, limiting food production and access to markets. Many farming families have been forced to abandon their land, while insecurity has restricted the movement of goods and humanitarian assistance.

Adding to the pressure are significant cuts in international humanitarian funding, which have reduced the resources available for emergency food assistance. Humanitarian agencies warn that funding shortfalls are forcing difficult decisions about the scale and reach of aid programs at a time when needs are rapidly increasing.

The WFP also highlighted rising farming and transportation costs linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. Increased fuel and import costs are driving up the prices of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, seeds, and machinery, making it more difficult for Sudanese farmers to cultivate crops and sustain production.

Food prices have surged across many parts of Sudan, placing basic necessities beyond the reach of countless families already affected by conflict and economic hardship. Rural communities, displaced populations, and areas with limited humanitarian access are among those most at risk.

The UN agency called for increased international support to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation, stressing that immediate investment in food assistance, agricultural recovery, and humanitarian access is essential to avert a deeper crisis.

Sudan is currently experiencing one of the world’s largest humanitarian emergencies, with millions of people facing acute food insecurity and an increasing risk of famine in the hardest-hit regions. Humanitarian organizations continue to urge the international community to provide additional funding and support to help save lives and stabilize food supplies across the country.
