MOGADISHU — Leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro’s” recent interview with Israel-based i24NEWS has triggered fresh political debate in Mogadishu, with individuals and politicians linked to the KAAH political movement discussing the statements and diplomatic issues raised during the interview.
The interview focused heavily on Somaliland’s expanding relationship with Israel, its efforts to gain wider international recognition, and the possibility of deeper cooperation between Hargeisa and foreign governments.
Irro said there are currently no plans for Israel to establish a military base in Somaliland, but he did not rule out the possibility of such an arrangement in the future. He also spoke about the opening of Somaliland’s representative mission in Jerusalem and the prospect of direct flights between Israel and Hargeisa.
Israel formally recognized Somaliland in December 2025, becoming the first UN member state to do so. Somalia strongly rejected the move, maintaining that Somaliland remains part of Somalia and describing the recognition as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The development has created a new diplomatic contest between Mogadishu and Hargeisa. Somalia has sought regional and international support for its position, while Somaliland has presented its new relationship with Israel as a major diplomatic breakthrough.
The debate among politicians in Mogadishu is therefore increasingly focused on whether Somaliland’s diplomatic outreach has produced tangible international gains, and whether Somalia’s broader diplomatic position continues to carry greater international support.
From that perspective, some political commentators may interpret the developments as evidence that Mogadishu currently holds important diplomatic advantages because Somalia retains international recognition as the sovereign state, while regional organizations such as IGAD have reaffirmed Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
At the same time, Somaliland has secured a significant diplomatic development through Israel’s recognition and has subsequently deepened high-level contacts with Israeli officials. In June 2026, Irro made the first state visit by a Somaliland president to Israel, where he was received by senior Israeli officials and addressed the Knesset.
The competing diplomatic positions have consequently intensified the debate over which side is gaining greater international influence. Rather than being settled by a single interview or diplomatic move, the issue is likely to depend on future recognition decisions, regional alliances, international diplomatic support and the direction of Somalia-Somaliland relations.
For politicians and observers in Mogadishu, Irro’s interview has therefore become another focal point in the wider debate over Somaliland’s international campaign and Somalia’s efforts to defend its territorial position.
