ISTANBUL — The 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) concluded on Monday in Istanbul, bringing together parliamentary delegations from across the globe to address pressing international challenges, including security, climate change and democratic governance.

Somalia was represented at the gathering by a delegation of lawmakers from both chambers of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, led by Second Deputy Speaker of the Lower House Abdullahi Omar Abshirow.

The annual assembly, one of the largest forums for parliamentary diplomacy, focused this year on strengthening global peace and security, advancing sustainable development, and enhancing cooperation among national legislatures amid growing geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.

In a speech to the assembly, Abshirow highlighted Somalia’s ongoing efforts to rebuild state institutions after decades of conflict, stressing the importance of fostering hope, ensuring security, and safeguarding justice for future generations. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to consolidating peace, promoting democratic governance and protecting citizens’ rights despite persistent security and development challenges.

Delegates also held a series of side meetings and bilateral talks aimed at deepening cooperation and sharing legislative experiences. Discussions underscored the role of parliaments in conflict prevention, climate action, and accountability in governance.

During the session, members elected Anda Filip of Romania as the IPU’s Secretary General, a position that plays a key role in coordinating the organization’s global parliamentary initiatives.

The IPU assembly is held twice a year and serves as a platform for lawmakers to exchange views and adopt resolutions on major international issues, reflecting a growing emphasis on parliamentary engagement in global decision-making.
