Security Forces Deploy Across Mogadishu as Protest Tensions Escalate

MOGADISHU — Heavily armed Somali security forces were deployed across key parts of the capital on Sunday as authorities moved to contain planned opposition protests, amid reports of casualties after troops allegedly opened fire on demonstrators in one district.

Residents said Mogadishu woke up to an unusually heavy military presence, with soldiers stationed around opposition strongholds and along major roads, some of which were blocked to restrict movement and prevent large gatherings.

In the Mirinaayo neighborhood, a known gathering point for opposition groups, large numbers of troops and military vehicles were seen deployed overnight. Witnesses said the area had been central to preparations for demonstrations expected in several districts across the capital.

The Federal Government of Somalia said late Saturday that it would not allow protesters to carry weapons, warning that anyone appearing armed in public would face immediate action from security forces.

Opposition leaders, who say they are facing increasing political pressure, had planned protests in at least 10 districts of Mogadishu, including areas hosting internally displaced communities. Authorities, however, insisted that any demonstration must be restricted to a single approved venue — Eng. Yariisow Stadium (formerly Koonis) in Abdiaziz district.

Tensions escalated in Dayniile district, where witnesses and local officials reported that security forces opened fire on civilians attempting to protest, resulting in deaths and injuries. The exact casualty toll remains unclear, but residents described scenes of panic as people fled the gunfire.

Neither government officials nor security agencies immediately commented in detail on the reported shootings, though authorities have repeatedly stressed the need to maintain order in the capital.

The developments come amid rising political tensions between the government and opposition over elections, constitutional issues and broader governance disputes.

Analysts warn that the heavy security response and restrictions on public assembly risk further inflaming the situation, especially if allegations of excessive force are confirmed.

The situation remains tense, with uncertainty over whether opposition groups will proceed with further gatherings or shift their strategy in the coming days.
