Somaliland Interior Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab Desires to Resign

HARGEISA — Somaliland’s Minister of Interior and Security, Abdalle Mohamed Arab, widely known as Sandhere, has reportedly expressed his intention to resign from his position in the administration of President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro.”

Sandheere was appointed Interior Minister following President Irro’s inauguration in December 2024. In the role, he has been responsible for key areas including internal security, regional administration, peacebuilding and coordination with security agencies.

The reported resignation comes amid ongoing political and security developments in Somaliland. Sandheere had continued to participate in official government activities in recent days.

On August 13, he briefed the Somaliland Cabinet on the security situation, describing the overall security environment as stable. He also discussed efforts to strengthen peace and relations between communities, particularly in the Awdal and Salel regions.

During his tenure, Sandheere was also involved in several significant political and security-related developments. In July, he was among senior Somaliland officials who received members of the North Eastern State parliament who had announced their defection to Somaliland.

However, the circumstances surrounding his reported resignation remain unclear. No official explanation has so far been released indicating whether the decision was linked to political disagreements, government policy, security issues or other internal matters.

If formally confirmed, Sandheere’s departure would mark a significant change within President Irro’s administration, given the strategic importance of the Interior Ministry and its role in overseeing domestic security and regional administration.

Attention is now expected to turn to whether President Irro will appoint a replacement and whether Sandheere will issue a public statement explaining the reasons for his resignation.

The Somaliland government has yet to officially announce a replacement or provide detailed comments on the reported resignation.

More details will follow as further information becomes available.
