South Africa Captain, Minister React to Mixed African Support After World Cup Defeat

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie and national team captain Ronwen Williams have responded to discussions over perceived lack of continental support following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.

South Africa lost to co-hosts Mexico on June 11 in Mexico City, a result that sparked widespread reaction on social media, including posts from users in several African countries expressing support for Mexico.

McKenzie said South Africa had not expected automatic backing from the continent, pushing back against suggestions that online reactions reflected broader African sentiment.

The match came amid heightened political tensions in South Africa over immigration, where recent protests have called for stricter measures against undocumented migrants from other African countries.

However, McKenzie stressed that sporting results should not be linked to political debates, dismissing attempts to connect the team’s defeat with regional tensions.

Separately, captain Ronwen Williams expressed disappointment over what he described as limited support from other African nations following the loss.

Speaking after the match, Williams said the team had hoped for greater solidarity from across the continent, particularly given South Africa’s role as one of Africa’s representatives at the expanded tournament.

South Africa’s participation in the World Cup comes as several traditional African football powers failed to qualify for the 2026 edition, leaving Bafana Bafana as one of the continent’s few representatives on the global stage.
