ACCRA — The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has welcomed a new contingent of the Ghana Formed Police Unit (GFPU-5), which has been deployed to Mogadishu, Baidoa and Beletweyne to support efforts aimed at strengthening security and policing across Somalia.

The newly deployed officers will work closely with the Somali Police Force (SPF) through joint security operations, specialized training programs and mentorship initiatives designed to enhance the operational capacity and professionalism of Somali police personnel.

The deployment comes as GFPU-4 completed its tour of duty and handed over responsibilities to the incoming contingent. During its mission, GFPU-4 worked alongside Somali police officers in implementing the AUSSOM mandate, contributing to efforts to improve public safety, strengthen law enforcement institutions and support stabilization activities in areas recovering from conflict.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, AUSSOM Police Coordinator Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Samuel Asiedu Okanta congratulated the incoming officers and urged them to maintain high standards of professionalism and discipline throughout their deployment.

He emphasized the importance of respecting local communities, working closely with Somali security institutions and adhering to international policing standards while carrying out their duties.

“The success of AUSSOM’s policing mission depends on your commitment, integrity and dedication to supporting Somalia’s Peace, Security and Stabilization process,” Okanta said.

AUSSOM police officers play a key role in supporting Somalia’s security transition by helping to build the capacity of national law enforcement agencies, improve community policing and enhance the ability of Somali authorities to respond to security challenges.

The deployment of GFPU-5 underscores the continued commitment of Ghana and the African Union to supporting Somalia’s efforts to strengthen security institutions and promote long-term peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
