MEKELLE — The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has accused Ethiopia’s federal government of preparing for a new military offensive in the northern Tigray region, warning of a potential return to conflict.

In a statement, the TPLF said federal forces were conducting military movements it described as preparations for war and had increased drone strikes targeting its positions. The group claimed the attacks had caused casualties and heightened insecurity in the region.
The TPLF also alleged that Ethiopian forces were mobilising in multiple directions near Tigray’s borders, describing the developments as “dangerous steps” that could destabilise the fragile situation.
It urged residents of Tigray to remain united, support local forces and prepare for what it called emerging security threats.
The Ethiopian federal government has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
The accusations come amid lingering tensions following the 2020–2022 war in Tigray, which killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions before a peace agreement was signed in Pretoria in November 2022.
Analysts have repeatedly warned that sporadic clashes and political disagreements risk undermining the fragile peace in northern Ethiopia.
