Somaliland faces diplomatic pressure

HARGEISA — Growing speculation about closer ties between Somaliland administration and Israel has triggered political tensions across the Horn of Africa and the Middle East, with several regional actors expressing concern over potential geopolitical consequences.

According to local observers, Somaliland is facing increasing diplomatic pressure from a number of Arab, East African and Horn of Africa countries that oppose any move perceived as strengthening Israel’s influence in the region. The developments have sparked debate among politicians, analysts and residents in Somaliland.

Adding to the concerns, Yemen’s Houthi movement has reportedly threatened to target facilities and interests linked to Somaliland authorities if cooperation with Israel deepens. The statements have heightened fears among some residents in the cities of Hargeisa and Berbera, where discussions about regional security have intensified.

Many citizens worry that escalating regional rivalries could negatively affect stability, trade and investment in the strategically important Red Sea corridor.

Meanwhile, Somalia’s Federal Government has strongly criticized any unilateral foreign policy initiatives by Somaliland authorities, describing such actions as unacceptable and reiterating that Somaliland remains part of Somalia under international law.

Several regional powers, including Egypt, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, have consistently voiced support for Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity. These countries have repeatedly emphasized the importance of preserving Somalia’s internationally recognized borders and avoiding actions that could lead to further fragmentation of the country.

Political analysts say the situation highlights the growing strategic competition in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa region, where global and regional powers are increasingly seeking influence over key maritime routes and security arrangements.
