EU Reviews Security Missions in Somalia

MOGADISHU — A delegation from the European External Action Service (EEAS) has held talks in Somalia with government partners to assess the performance of key EU security missions in the country.

The discussions focused on the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM Somalia) and the EU Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAP Somalia), both central pillars of the EU’s security engagement in the Horn of Africa.

Officials said the review examined operational progress on the ground, including training delivery, institutional support, coordination with Somali security agencies, and overall mission effectiveness.

The delegation also assessed the political relevance of the missions and their alignment with wider European Union strategic interests, including regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, and maritime security in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.

Somali government representatives reportedly highlighted both progress made in strengthening national security institutions and ongoing challenges, including capacity gaps, logistics constraints, and coordination issues between security agencies.

The EEAS said the review is part of a broader effort to ensure EU missions remain “fit for purpose” as Somalia’s security sector continues to evolve and take on greater responsibility.

Findings from the visit will be submitted to EU decision-making bodies in Brussels, where future adjustments to mandate, funding, and operational priorities are expected to be considered.
