ADDIS ABABA — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has received a briefing on the political situation in Sudan and ongoing mediation efforts, according to an AU statement.

He was briefed by Mohamed Belaiche, his Special Representative and Head of the African Union Liaison Office to Sudan.

The discussions focused on developments in Sudan’s political crisis and efforts aimed at supporting dialogue among Sudanese stakeholders amid the ongoing conflict that erupted in 2023.

Both officials also discussed plans to reopen the African Union Liaison Office in Khartoum, which has been affected by the deteriorating security situation in the country.

The AU Chairperson stressed the need for a rapid assessment of conditions on the ground to determine when operations could safely resume. He said the presence of an AU office in Khartoum would be important for strengthening engagement with local actors and supporting efforts toward an inclusive political process.

The African Union has been playing a mediation role in Sudan as regional and international actors continue to push for an end to fighting and a return to civilian-led governance.
