Kenyan MP Warns Against Clan-Based Gatherings in Eastleigh Amid Calls for Unity

NAIROBI — Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan has warned against gatherings involving clan flags in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area, saying such activities will not be tolerated and urging residents to prioritize unity and lawful conduct.

In remarks shared locally, Hassan said public spaces in the constituency must be used responsibly and cautioned against what he described as divisive displays that could undermine social cohesion.

He said authorities would take action to maintain order if gatherings perceived to promote clan-based symbolism in public areas continue, stressing the importance of peace in one of Nairobi’s most densely populated commercial districts.

Eastleigh, home to a large Somali business and residential community, has previously seen discussions around cultural expression, identity politics and the use of public spaces for community-related events.

The lawmaker urged residents to avoid activities that could be misinterpreted or create tension, adding that the constituency’s stability depends on respect for shared civic norms.

Local authorities have not issued a formal directive on the issue, and it remains unclear whether specific incidents prompted the remarks.

The comments have sparked discussion within sections of the community about identity, public order and the boundaries of cultural expression in urban spaces.

Further clarification is expected from security agencies and constituency officials.
