KINSHASA — The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has reaffirmed that the protection of civilians remains at the center of its mandate, as the mission continues efforts to prevent violence, support peace efforts, and strengthen state institutions across the country.

The UN Security Council, through Resolution 2808 (2025), renewed MONUSCO’s mandate and emphasized the importance of protecting civilians, supporting stabilization efforts, and assisting the Congolese authorities in restoring security and strengthening governance.
MONUSCO said civilian protection remains a strategic priority, particularly in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where communities continue to face threats from armed groups, intercommunal violence, displacement, and humanitarian challenges.
Working closely with the Congolese government, local authorities, communities, and humanitarian partners, MONUSCO uses an integrated approach that brings together its civilian, military, and police components. The mission’s activities include early warning mechanisms, preventive deployments, protection patrols, mediation efforts, and support for local peace initiatives.
On the ground, MONUSCO peacekeepers conduct regular patrols in areas considered at high risk of attacks, providing reassurance to civilians and helping deter violence. The mission also engages directly with communities, traditional leaders, women’s groups, and youth organizations to identify security concerns and develop local solutions.
Beyond military operations, MONUSCO supports dialogue and reconciliation efforts aimed at reducing tensions between communities. The mission also works to combat hate speech, incitement to violence, and misinformation, which the UN says can fuel conflict and deepen divisions among populations.
The mission further assists efforts to strengthen the rule of law by supporting judicial institutions, police reform, and accountability mechanisms. MONUSCO says protecting civilians requires not only responding to immediate threats but also addressing the underlying causes of insecurity through stronger institutions and inclusive governance.
The reaffirmation of MONUSCO’s mandate comes as eastern DRC continues to experience instability linked to armed group activity, territorial disputes, and political tensions. Millions of civilians have been affected by conflict, with many forced to flee their homes due to insecurity.
The UN mission stressed that lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo depends on cooperation between national authorities, regional partners, communities, and international actors.
MONUSCO said it remains committed to working alongside the Congolese people to prevent violence, protect vulnerable populations, and support efforts toward long-term peace and stability.
