NAIROBI — Kenyan President William Ruto has directed national security agencies to investigate what he termed “goonism” and ensure that individuals involved in criminal activities are brought to justice.
Ruto ordered security officials to identify and take action against groups accused of engaging in violence, intimidation, and public disorder, warning that the government would not allow acts that threaten national security or undermine the rule of law.
The president’s directive comes amid growing concerns in Kenya over the emergence of organised groups allegedly involved in disrupting public order and being used for political or criminal purposes.
“I direct all national security agencies to dig into this matter of goonism and ensure that those responsible are dealt with according to the law,” Ruto said.
The move is expected to intensify investigations by security agencies as authorities seek to establish the individuals and networks behind alleged acts of violence and intimidation.
Rights groups and opposition figures have welcomed efforts to address criminal activities but have called for transparency, accountability, and respect for constitutional rights during investigations.
The government says the action is part of broader efforts to strengthen security, protect citizens, and ensure that no individual or group is above the law.
