TEHRAN — Iran has issued a strong warning to Bulgaria after comments from the Bulgarian prime minister that Sofia was considering a U.S. request to deploy military aircraft in the country for operations related to Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the Bulgarian government was aware of what Tehran described as the “illegality” of U.S. attacks against Iran and accused Washington of violating the United Nations Charter.
Baghaei warned that any Bulgarian involvement in preparing or supporting military operations against Iran would be viewed by Tehran as “complicity” in what it described as an act of aggression and potential war crimes.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with regional governments facing pressure over their positions and military cooperation with Washington.
Bulgaria has not publicly confirmed any final decision regarding the deployment request, and officials have said discussions involving security cooperation remain subject to review.
The dispute reflects wider geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran, as countries in Europe and the Middle East navigate relations with both Washington and Tehran while seeking to avoid further escalation.
Iran has repeatedly warned countries against allowing their territory or facilities to be used for military actions targeting the country, while the United States has maintained that its security partnerships are aimed at protecting regional stability and responding to threats.
