Mogadishu— Galmudug’s Deputy President Ali Dahir Eid has issued an urgent appeal to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) to swiftly deliver emergency assistance to drought-affected communities, warning that thousands of lives are at risk as humanitarian conditions deteriorate.

Speaking at a high-level meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday with SoDMA Commissioner Mahamud Moahlim Abdulle, Eid highlighted the growing crisis, particularly in areas near the Ethiopian border, where residents are grappling with acute shortages of food, clean water, and shelter.

“The situation is dire,” said Eid. “People are in urgent need of assistance, and we are calling on SoDMA to respond immediately.”

In addition to immediate aid, the Galmudug administration is advocating for long-term solutions to reduce the region’s vulnerability to future shocks. Eid proposed the establishment of a modern meat processing and cold storage facility to support the region’s livestock-based economy. He emphasized that such infrastructure could create jobs, strengthen food security, and enhance economic resilience.

Commissioner Abdulle responded positively, pledging SoDMA’s immediate support to address critical humanitarian needs. He also expressed the agency’s readiness to collaborate with Galmudug on the proposed livestock development initiative.

“We are ready to assist communities in crisis and support development projects that ensure long-term stability,” Abdulle said, adding that the proposed facility could attract international investment in coordination with Somalia’s development partners.

Somalia continues to face recurring climate-related disasters, with drought, displacement, and insecurity compounding humanitarian challenges across the country. Limited funding and access constraints have further strained aid efforts. SoDMA has been working closely with regional governments, including Galmudug, to scale up emergency response and build resilience in vulnerable communities.
