Kampala – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday announced the arrest of several local election officials over alleged fraud in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In a statement from the State House, Museveni condemned the officials for altering results, bribery, and interfering with voter registers. He described these actions as criminal and a distortion of Uganda’s electoral process.
He said that state agencies, including the Internal Security Organization and the police Criminal Investigation Directorate, had arrested and charged the culprits.
According to the NRM, about 9.2 million of its 18.5 million registered members participated in the village-level primaries held last Thursday across 72,000 villages, to select parliamentary and local council candidates.
The elections were marred by widespread reports of fraud, violence, and even deaths, according to local media reports. A party tribunal has been established to review petitions from aggrieved members.
Museveni assured party members that grievances are being addressed and the process will be corrected based on evidence.
Earlier this month, Museveni was nominated unopposed as the NRM’s presidential candidate for the 2026 elections.
He will be seeking a seventh consecutive five-year term. Uganda is scheduled to hold presidential and general elections in January 2026, with several opposition candidates expected to challenge the long-serving leader.
