CAIRO, (HAN) – Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, met in Cairo this week with Egypt’s Minister of Defense and Commander of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Majeed Saqr, in a high-level meeting that included senior Egyptian military officials. The discussions focused on deepening military cooperation, enhancing regional security, and supporting peace-building efforts in the Horn of Africa.
During the meeting, Minister Fiqi commended Egypt’s long-standing role in promoting stability and security in the region. He emphasized that Somalia and Egypt share a unified approach toward strategic issues affecting both countries and expressed hope that closer military coordination would contribute to regional peace.
“This meeting marks a significant step in strengthening the partnership between Somalia and Egypt,” Minister Fiqi said. “We are committed to working together to ensure security, support peace initiatives, and protect the interests of our people and region.”
General Saqr highlighted Egypt’s readiness to expand military collaboration with Somalia. He confirmed that Egyptian troops designated to support the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) will soon be deployed to Somalia to assist in capacity-building, security operations, and stabilization efforts.
The deployment of Egyptian forces comes at a time when Somalia continues to face security challenges, including threats from militant groups, and ongoing efforts by the federal government to strengthen governance and security structures in partnership with international allies.
Officials from both countries also discussed joint training programs, intelligence sharing, and initiatives to facilitate regional trade and mobility, reflecting a broader commitment to peace, stability, and strategic cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
