Mogadishu – The Somali Police have announced key safety measures ahead of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, aimed at ensuring peaceful and joyful commemorations across the country.

Speaking at a press conference, Moalim Mahdi, the Commander of the Banadir Regional Police, stated that only fireworks will be permitted during the festivities, while the use of live ammunition is strictly prohibited.

This directive is part of broader efforts to protect public safety and prevent any incidents during the Independence Week celebrations.

Tonight marks June 26, the historic day when Somalia’s northern regions gained independence. Major events are expected to take place both within the country and among Somali communities abroad to commemorate this important milestone in the nation’s history.

The Somali Police are calling on all citizens to celebrate responsibly and to come together in unity to honor the sacrifices made in the struggle for freedom and independence.

On June 26, 1960, the northern region of Somalia achieved independence from British colonial rule, taking a significant step toward national unity. This was followed by the southern region gaining independence from Italian colonial rule on July 1, 1960. Together, these events marked the formation of the independent Republic of Somalia.
