Mogadishu —Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and opposition leaders from the Salvation Forum have concluded a major round of political talks in Mogadishu, reaching consensus on a set of priority issues and agreeing to reconvene negotiations on July 3, following the country’s Independence Week celebrations.
According to a statement from Villa Somalia, the discussions were held in a “positive atmosphere” and resulted in agreement on four critical agenda points central to Somalia’s ongoing political transition:
- Strengthening national unity
- Finalizing the provisional constitution
- Enhancing security and combating terrorism
- Creating a jointly agreed framework for direct elections
“The meeting, which opened in a constructive spirit, led to detailed discussions and agreement on four key issues vital to Somalia’s state-building process,” the presidency said.
The two sides also pledged to engage other political actors not currently involved in the talks, encouraging their participation in the next phase of dialogue.
The high-level negotiations, involving President Mohamud and prominent opposition figures—including former presidents—come amid growing international calls for Somali leaders to resolve persistent political rifts and move toward the country’s first fully direct elections.
The talks are set to resume on July 3, 2025, after national celebrations marking Somalia’s Independence Week.
