BELEM — Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Salah Ahmed Jama, has joined global leaders at the COP30 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Belem, Brazil, where he called for urgent international action to address the devastating impacts of climate change on vulnerable nations.

In his address to the summit, Mr. Jama underscored that Somalia remains one of the countries most affected by climate shocks, despite contributing little to global greenhouse gas emissions. He highlighted the recurring droughts, floods, and environmental degradation that continue to threaten livelihoods, food security, and stability across the Horn of Africa.

“Somalia has endured the harsh reality of repeated droughts and severe weather events that have displaced communities and devastated our economy,” Mr. Jama said. “Yet we are among the least responsible for the pollution driving this crisis. The world must act together to protect those who suffer the most from climate change.”

The Deputy Prime Minister also outlined Somalia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and its National Climate Adaptation Plan, which form part of the country’s National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029). The plan focuses on four key areas: adaptation and resilience building, climate finance, loss and damage compensation, and transition to clean and renewable energy.

Mr. Jama emphasized that addressing the climate emergency requires shared responsibility and stronger global cooperation, particularly in providing technical and financial support to developing nations like Somalia.

“We cannot face this challenge alone,” he told delegates. “Collective action, solidarity, and justice are essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and to ensure a sustainable future for all.”

The COP30 summit, hosted in the Amazonian city of Belem, brings together world leaders, environmental experts, and civil society representatives to review progress on the 2015 Paris Agreement and accelerate efforts toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient world.
