ASMARA — Tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have intensified, with both countries exchanging sharp accusations, raising fears of a potential military confrontation along their shared border. Analysts warn that the situation could destabilize the already fragile security environment in the Horn of Africa.

Footage and photographs from the border region show significant military activity, including the movement of troops, the deployment of units to forward positions, and the acquisition and positioning of weaponry. These developments suggest that both governments are preparing for possible conflict, heightening concerns among regional observers.

Security analysts have cautioned that the rapid escalation of military preparedness on both sides could trigger a new phase of instability. They note that any small incident along the border could quickly spiral into a larger confrontation, given the history of conflict and lingering tensions between the two nations.

Reports from inside the region indicate that Eritrea has strengthened its military ties with Egypt and reportedly provided arms support to certain ethnic groups opposing the administration of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This has fueled accusations from Addis Ababa that Eritrea is interfering in Ethiopia’s internal affairs, while Asmara insists it is protecting its own strategic interests.

The renewed tension comes amid a broader backdrop of regional insecurity, including previous conflicts in the Tigray region, disputes over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and long-standing border disputes. Observers warn that a further deterioration of relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea could have serious implications for neighbouring countries, including Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia.

Diplomats and international organisations have urged both sides to de-escalate tensions and engage in dialogue to prevent a potential military clash. The situation remains fluid, with both nations maintaining a high military presence along the border.
