ASMARA — The government of Eritrea has formally announced its decision to withdraw from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), citing the regional bloc’s failure to uphold its legal responsibilities and contribute effectively to regional stability. The announcement was made in a statement released today by Eritrea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Eritrea has deemed it necessary to withdraw from a regional organization that has lost its legal mandate and authority, and has failed to actively participate in fostering peace and stability in the region,” the statement read.

The move comes amid heightened tensions between Eritrea and neighboring Ethiopia, as well as growing criticism of IGAD’s diminishing influence in the Horn of Africa. Eritrea has expressed frustration that the organization lacks the capacity to mediate effectively among its member states and has accused IGAD of being overly influenced by Ethiopia, which it claims dominates decision-making within the bloc.

The Eritrean government also pointed out the lack of meaningful engagement with other influential IGAD members, such as Djibouti, which hosts the organization’s headquarters. According to Asmara, these dynamics have left Eritrea questioning the value of its continued participation in the regional forum.

IGAD, established in 1986 as a regional trade and development bloc, has in recent years expanded its mandate to include conflict mediation and peacekeeping. However, Eritrea’s withdrawal underscores the challenges the organization faces in maintaining cohesion among its member states, especially as regional conflicts and geopolitical rivalries intensify.

Analysts say Eritrea’s exit could further complicate peace and security efforts in the Horn of Africa, particularly as tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia have periodically escalated despite a formal peace agreement in 2018. Eritrea’s decision also raises questions about IGAD’s future role and effectiveness in mediating regional disputes and promoting economic integration.
