ISTANBUL — Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris has proposed expanded Turkish involvement in the country’s major infrastructure projects, including the construction of a new international airport, an administrative capital and specialized medical cities, while also requesting the rescheduling of Sudan’s outstanding debt to Türkiye, Sudanese officials said.

The proposal was discussed during talks Saturday in Istanbul between Idris and Türkiye’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Musa Kulaklıkaya. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing economic cooperation and coordinating positions on regional issues.

According to officials familiar with the talks, Prime Minister Idris outlined Sudan’s priorities for post-conflict recovery and development, emphasizing the need for strategic partnerships to rebuild critical infrastructure and revive public services. He highlighted Türkiye’s experience in large-scale construction, health infrastructure and urban development as key reasons for seeking Turkish participation.

Idris also raised Sudan’s external debt obligations to Türkiye, requesting a rescheduling arrangement to ease financial pressure as the country works to stabilize its economy amid ongoing political and security challenges.

Kulaklıkaya reaffirmed Türkiye’s interest in maintaining strong ties with Sudan and expressed Ankara’s readiness to explore opportunities for cooperation, particularly in infrastructure, health and investment. He noted that any agreements would be subject to further technical discussions and consultations with relevant Turkish institutions.

The talks come as Sudan seeks international partners to support reconstruction efforts and economic recovery following years of instability and conflict, while Türkiye continues to expand its diplomatic and economic engagement across Africa.
