ANKARA – Officials at Mersin Port, one of Türkiye’s largest and busiest seaports, have signed a cooperation agreement with their counterparts from Port Sudan, aimed at strengthening maritime trade and improving the movement of goods between the two destinations.
The agreement was signed during a meeting attended by port officials and trade representatives from both sides. It focuses on enhancing logistical coordination, sharing technical expertise, and facilitating smoother cargo handling and transport operations between Mersin, located on Türkiye’s Mediterranean coast, and Port Sudan, Sudan’s main maritime gateway on the Red Sea.
Under the deal, the two ports will work together to improve efficiency in shipping procedures, customs coordination, and port management practices. Officials said the cooperation is expected to reduce transit times, lower operational costs, and encourage increased trade flows between Türkiye and African markets.
Mersin Port serves as a key hub for Türkiye’s exports and imports, connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia through well-established maritime routes. Port Sudan plays a strategic role in regional trade, serving not only Sudan but also neighboring countries that rely on the Red Sea corridor for access to global markets.
Officials from both sides said the agreement reflects growing economic ties between Türkiye and Africa and supports broader efforts to expand commercial partnerships, particularly in agriculture, construction materials, manufactured goods, and humanitarian supplies.
No financial figures were disclosed, and authorities said further technical meetings will be held to implement the cooperation framework.
