Al-Shabaab Claims 321 Somali Soldiers Killed in Leego Ambush as Reports Emerge of Captured Military Vehicles

MOGADISHU — Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for a deadly ambush targeting Somali federal government forces near Leego, along the route connecting Mogadishu and Baidoa, claiming that 321 soldiers were killed and several military vehicles captured.

The reported attack occurred on Monday, October 26, in the Jameeca area near Leego, during Operation Banooda, a military campaign launched by the Somali National Army to confront Al-Shabaab positions and improve security in southwestern Somalia. The claimed death toll has not been independently verified.

Al-Shabaab Claims Heavy Casualties and Seizure of Military Equipment

According to statements attributed to Al-Shabaab, its fighters killed hundreds of government soldiers during the ambush and seized weapons, ammunition, vehicles and other military supplies.

The group also claimed to have captured Turkish-supplied armoured vehicles, including BMC Kirpi mine-resistant vehicles. However, the number and condition of the vehicles allegedly seized have not been independently confirmed.

The reported losses have raised questions about the security of military supply routes and the challenges facing federal forces conducting operations in areas where Al-Shabaab maintains an armed presence.

Somali Defence Ministry Reports 75 Militants Killed

Somalia’s Ministry of Defence offered a different account of the confrontation, stating that government forces killed approximately 75 Al-Shabaab fighters and wounded another 56 during several hours of fighting.

The ministry said the militants used explosives-laden vehicles during the attack, damaging some military vehicles. It maintained that Operation Banooda would continue despite the fighting.

The ministry’s statement did not confirm the alleged death of 321 government soldiers. A separate report cited a Somali military officer who said at least 20 soldiers had been killed in an ambush in the southern Bay region, while some missing soldiers later reached Baledogle. The full casualty figures remain unclear.

Political Tensions Complicate the Security Situation

The fighting comes amid heightened political and military tensions in Somalia’s South West State, where federal authorities and forces loyal to former regional leader Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen have been involved in a wider struggle over control of territory.

Reports have described separate clashes involving forces aligned with Laftagareen and federal troops. However, the circumstances surrounding individual territorial changes and the extent to which these developments affected the Leego operation require further independent verification.

Claims that Laftagareen collaborated with Al-Shabaab, as well as allegations concerning the group’s relationship with political actors, should not be treated as established facts without credible supporting evidence.

Operation Banooda Faces a Critical Test

Operation Banooda is intended to weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence and improve government control over areas in southwestern Somalia. The latest confrontation highlights the continuing difficulties facing Somali forces as they attempt to secure strategic roads and maintain supply lines.

The alleged capture of military equipment, if confirmed, could have implications for the government’s operations. Nevertheless, the scale of the reported losses remains uncertain because the principal accounts from the opposing sides differ significantly.

What Is Known About the Reported Attack?

  • Al-Shabaab’s claim: 321 Somali government soldiers killed.
  • Government’s account: Approximately 75 Al-Shabaab fighters killed and 56 wounded.
  • Military equipment: Al-Shabaab claims to have seized armoured vehicles, weapons and supplies; the reported scale of the captures remains unverified.
  • Casualty verification: The reported figures and the full extent of equipment losses have not been independently established.

The confrontation represents another serious development in Somalia’s prolonged conflict, with the final human and material cost of the fighting still unknown.
