Mogadishu — China is increasing its support for Somalia’s defence sector and the development of the national army, following a series of meetings between officials from the Federal Government of Somalia and Chinese representatives.
According to officials, Beijing has signalled stronger engagement with Mogadishu, including assistance aimed at strengthening security institutions and military capacity.
China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has also stepped up its diplomatic backing for Somalia in international forums.
The move comes amid growing political tensions after reported contacts between Somaliland and Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China considers part of its territory.
Somalia considers Somaliland part of its sovereign territory and maintains that all foreign relations must be conducted through the federal government in Mogadishu.
Beijing’s increased engagement is seen as part of its broader “One China” policy, which aligns with Somalia’s position on Taiwan-related diplomacy.
