CAIRO — Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez held a telephone conversation on Thursday to discuss a reported drone attack targeting Egypt’s Damietta Port, as well as broader regional security developments.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency, President Sisi said Egyptian authorities were conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the details of the attack.
Sisi and Sánchez also discussed the need for coordinated international efforts to prevent further escalation in the region and address growing security challenges.
The Egyptian president stressed the importance of joint action to maintain regional stability and avoid the expansion of conflicts that could threaten maritime security and economic activity.
Damietta Port, located on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, is one of the country’s major commercial and strategic ports, handling cargo, energy-related activities, and international trade.
The reported attack comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing concerns over the security of strategic infrastructure and maritime routes in the Middle East.
Egypt has called for restraint and diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, while continuing security assessments of incidents affecting its territory and critical facilities.
