MOGADISHU — The European Union and its missions in Somalia have extended congratulations to the Somali people on the country’s 66th Independence Day, praising what they described as decades of resilience and reaffirming continued support for peace and development efforts.

In a joint message, the EU delegation in Somalia said it joined Somalis in celebrating “66 years of resilience, hope, and independence,” adding that the bloc remains committed to supporting the country’s path toward long-term stability and prosperity.

“As a proud partner, we remain committed to supporting Somalia’s journey toward lasting peace and prosperity,” the statement said.

The message was echoed by EU security and military missions operating in the country, including EUCAP Somalia, EUTM Somalia, and the European Union Naval Force Operation Atalanta, which have been involved in supporting Somali security institutions, maritime security, and counter-piracy efforts in the wider Horn of Africa region.

Somalia marked its Independence Day on July 1, commemorating the 1960 independence of the former British Somaliland and its subsequent unification with the former Italian-administered territory.

The anniversary is widely celebrated across the country and among the Somali diaspora, often serving as a moment for reflection on progress made and challenges that remain, including security, governance, and economic recovery after decades of conflict.

International partners have regularly used the occasion to reaffirm support for Somalia’s stabilization efforts, particularly in strengthening national security forces and building institutional capacity.

This year’s message from the EU missions comes as Somalia continues its efforts to consolidate state institutions and expand control over territory previously affected by armed insurgency.

Officials say continued international cooperation remains essential as the country works toward achieving long-term peace and development goals.
