Former Kassala Governor Accuses Sudan’s Leadership of Fueling Tribal Conflicts in the East

KHARTOUM — Former Kassala state governor Saleh Ammar has accused the administration of Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of deliberately targeting communities in eastern Sudan and exacerbating tribal tensions.

In remarks shared publicly, Ammar alleged that political and security actors based in Port Sudan are encouraging or exploiting tribal disputes in order to weaken social cohesion in the region.

He said such divisions were being used to consolidate control over strategic and resource-rich areas in eastern Sudan, though he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claims.

The comments come amid ongoing political instability in Sudan, where rival power centers and armed actors continue to compete for influence following the outbreak of conflict in 2023.

Authorities have not yet publicly responded to the allegations.

The situation in eastern Sudan remains sensitive, with periodic tensions reported between communities, alongside broader concerns over governance, security, and resource allocation.
