TEHRAN — The Iranian government has released a list of countries whose citizens can enter Iran without obtaining a visa, with Egypt becoming the only African nation among the countries granted visa-free access.
The decision places Egypt alongside nine other countries, including Turkey and China, whose citizens are now eligible to travel to Iran without going through the traditional visa application process.
Despite Africa having 54 recognized countries, only Egypt was included in Iran’s visa-free travel arrangement. Citizens from other African countries must continue to use alternative entry procedures, including visa-on-arrival programs where available, electronic visa applications (eVisa), or applying through Iranian embassies and consulates.
For Somali passport holders wishing to travel to Iran, the existing visa requirements remain in place. Travelers are advised to contact the nearest Iranian embassy or consulate to submit a visa application before their journey.
The cost of obtaining an Iranian visa for Somali citizens is reported to be less than $100, meaning Somali travelers are still required to follow the previous visa application procedures.
Iran has expanded its visa policies in recent years as part of efforts to increase tourism, strengthen economic relations, and encourage international travel. However, access remains limited for many African countries due to diplomatic arrangements, security considerations, and bilateral agreements.
Travel experts advise Somali citizens and other travelers to confirm the latest entry requirements with Iranian diplomatic missions before planning their trips, as visa policies can change depending on government decisions and international relations.
