BRUSSELS — A 54-year-old man in Brussels has died after intervening to defend a woman who was reportedly being targeted with racist and Islamophobic abuse on a tram, according to local reports.
Driss Atouane, a supermarket manager and father of Moroccan heritage, confronted a man who was allegedly directing anti-Muslim insults and abusive remarks toward another passenger.
Witnesses said Atouane attempted to stop the harassment, but he was then attacked from behind and assaulted. Reports indicate that he was beaten while on the ground during the incident.
Atouane was conscious when emergency services transported him to hospital, but his condition later deteriorated. He fell into a coma and died on Sunday after suffering serious injuries.
