MOGADISHU — Somalia’s political tensions have intensified following a dispute over the participation of the Towfiiq political organization in the upcoming repeat elections in Galmudug, with critics accusing the government of creating an increasingly difficult political environment for opposition groups.
Political commentators and opposition figures have described the situation as a serious political crossroads, with some arguing that the country’s political leadership is facing growing pressure over the management of the electoral process.
A statement circulating among Somali political circles claims that the situation has reached a critical point, alleging that Villa Somalia has effectively presented political actors with two choices: either accept the political direction being pursued by the government or withdraw from the process.
The statement specifically refers to the Towfiiq political organization, suggesting that the group has been placed under pressure over its participation in the electoral process.
However, the circumstances surrounding Towfiiq’s absence from the list of parties participating in the Galmudug re-run election remain disputed.
Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announced that Towfiiq was not among the 12 political organizations approved to contest the September 30 re-run election. The commission later said that Towfiiq had failed to submit its candidate list before the deadline, rather than being formally excluded by the commission.
Towfiiq has rejected the situation and said it was prepared to participate in the election, insisting that the process should be conducted in accordance with Somalia’s laws, regulations and electoral procedures.
The dispute has particular significance because Towfiiq previously challenged the results of the Galmudug elections in court. Somalia’s Supreme Court subsequently annulled the disputed results and ordered a repeat election.
The controversy has therefore renewed questions about the credibility of the electoral process, the role of political organizations and the relationship between the federal government and political actors at the regional level.
The political debate is unfolding against a wider backdrop of uncertainty in Somalia, where disagreements over elections, constitutional arrangements and the distribution of political authority have continued to generate tensions between the federal government and various political groups.
The statement also criticizes what it describes as an “expired” political leadership, suggesting that some actors are attempting to preserve political influence despite questions surrounding their mandates.
Those claims, however, remain political allegations and have not been independently established.
