KIGALI – The Government of Rwanda has signed a major sponsorship agreement with English Premier League club Aston Villa that will see the “Visit Rwanda” brand displayed on the front of the club’s shirts beginning with the 2026/27 season.

The deal, reportedly worth around £20 million per year, is the largest shirt sponsorship agreement in Aston Villa’s history and marks a significant expansion of Rwanda’s international tourism marketing strategy. The agreement comes shortly after the conclusion of Rwanda’s eight-year partnership with Arsenal, during which the “Visit Rwanda” brand gained global visibility through one of the world’s most watched football clubs.

Under the new partnership, Aston Villa players will wear the Visit Rwanda logo during Premier League, domestic cup, and European competition matches, giving the East African nation exposure to millions of football fans across the globe. The sponsorship is expected to place Rwanda’s tourism campaign at the center of one of the world’s most commercially successful sports leagues.

Rwanda’s government described the agreement as a strategic investment aimed at enhancing the country’s international profile, attracting more tourists, and promoting business and investment opportunities. Officials believe the partnership will help position Rwanda as a leading tourism destination in Africa while showcasing its wildlife, culture, conference facilities, and growing economy to a global audience.

The move reflects Rwanda’s continued use of sports sponsorships as a tool of economic diplomacy and nation branding. In recent years, the country has invested heavily in partnerships with major football clubs and sporting events as part of a broader effort to strengthen its international image and increase tourism revenues.

According to government figures, Rwanda’s tourism sector generated a record $685 million in revenue last year, driven by nearly 1.5 million international visitors. Tourism remains one of the country’s most important sources of foreign exchange, alongside exports and international investment.

Aston Villa, one of England’s most historic football clubs, has experienced a resurgence in recent seasons, regularly competing in European competitions and challenging among the Premier League’s top teams. The club’s growing international audience is believed to have played a key role in attracting Rwanda to the partnership.

Supporters of the deal argue that football sponsorships provide Rwanda with unmatched global exposure and can help attract visitors, investors, and international events. They point to increased awareness of Rwanda following previous sports partnerships as evidence of the strategy’s effectiveness.

However, the country’s sports sponsorship policies have also attracted scrutiny from critics who question whether public funds should be allocated to overseas football partnerships. Rwandan officials maintain that the investments deliver long-term economic benefits by increasing tourism, strengthening the country’s global brand, and creating new business opportunities.

The Aston Villa agreement marks a new chapter in Rwanda’s sports marketing strategy and underscores the growing role of football as a platform for national promotion. As the Visit Rwanda logo prepares to appear on Villa shirts from the 2026/27 season, the partnership is expected to become one of the most visible tourism campaigns associated with African nation branding in global sport.
