Somali Defence Minister Faces Backlash Over Remarks Amid Hiiraan Security Tensions

MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Defence Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi has faced political criticism following remarks that some local figures and commentators interpreted as referring to sensitive security and clan dynamics in the Hiiraan region, where government forces are conducting ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab.

“The remarks have been misinterpreted and taken out of context,” the minister said in response to the controversy, rejecting claims that his comments were intended to inflame tensions.

He also said, “No one can kill MP Abdullahi Mohamed Ali Sanboolshe,” adding that the security personnel providing protection around him are from the Hawadle clan.

The comments circulated widely on Somali social media and political platforms, triggering debate in an already fragile security environment in central Somalia. Critics accused the minister of using language that could deepen local divisions and complicate reconciliation efforts, while others argued the remarks reflected realities on the ground in conflict-affected areas.

Hiiraan remains one of Somalia’s key frontline regions in the fight against Al-Shabaab, where federal forces, allied regional troops and local community militias are conducting coordinated operations aimed at dislodging the armed group, which authorities refer to as “Al-Shabaab.”

Local reports indicate that security conditions in parts of the region remain unstable following recent clashes and shifting control over rural areas, although the federal government maintains that counter-insurgency operations continue to make gradual progress.

Opposition figures and some community leaders warned that political statements linked to military developments risk undermining cooperation between communities and security forces, and could further complicate stabilisation efforts in the region.

Others urged that security discussions should not be politicised during ongoing military operations.

Somalia continues to face a complex security landscape, with government forces and allies carrying out sustained operations across central and southern regions in an effort to weaken Al-Shabaab and extend state authority.
