Mogadishu — The Election Committee of the Federal Parliament of Somalia has officially closed the nomination process for the position of Speaker of the House of the People, confirming that two candidates have fulfilled all legal and procedural requirements to contest the position.
The announcement was made by the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Election Committee, Deputy Dr. Abdirisak Omar Mohamed, following the expiration of the official deadline for submitting candidacy applications.
According to the committee, the registration process was conducted in accordance with the Somali Constitution, the internal regulations of the House of the People, and established parliamentary electoral procedures.
The two candidates officially registered for the election are:
- Deputy Abdulkadir Omar Mo’alim (Dada)
- Deputy Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur (Jaamac), Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport
The committee confirmed that both candidates had satisfied the required legal conditions and completed the necessary procedures to participate in the Speaker’s election.
Official Candidacy Certificates
The Election Committee announced that official certificates confirming the candidates’ eligibility will be handed to the two contenders on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
The issuance of the certificates will mark the beginning of the next phase of the electoral process, bringing the contest closer to the parliamentary vote.
The committee reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all stages of the election are conducted according to the principles of neutrality, transparency, fairness and integrity. It also stressed that the process will fully comply with the Constitution, parliamentary regulations and the electoral procedures previously adopted by the committee.
With the nomination period now officially closed, the race for the Speakership of Somalia’s House of the People has entered a decisive stage. The two candidates will compete for one of the country’s most significant constitutional positions as lawmakers prepare for the scheduled election.
The election will proceed according to the timetable previously announced by the Parliamentary Election Committee, with attention now turning to the final preparations ahead of the parliamentary vote.
