NAIROBI — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud traveled to Kenya on Sunday for high-level discussions with Kenyan President William Ruto amid growing political and security challenges in Somalia.

The meeting, held in the Narok/Naivasha region, focused on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation on regional peace, security, trade, and development between the two neighboring countries.

According to officials, the leaders reviewed the security situation in the Horn of Africa, including ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and promote regional stability. Somalia and Kenya remain key partners in regional security initiatives, particularly in the fight against the Al-Shabaab insurgency.

The visit comes at a crucial time for Somalia as debates over the country’s electoral process continue. Discussions among the federal government, opposition leaders, and regional stakeholders have intensified in recent months as political actors seek consensus on future elections and governance reforms.

Diplomatic sources said regional leaders are encouraging dialogue among Somali political stakeholders to prevent prolonged uncertainty that could undermine stability, security operations, and international support programs.

Kenya has long played an important role in regional diplomacy involving Somalia and has supported efforts aimed at fostering political dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes.

In a statement, Villa Somalia said President Hassan Sheikh and President Ruto discussed ways to deepen cooperation between their countries and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace, security, and development across the Horn of Africa.

While officials confirmed that a range of bilateral and regional issues were discussed, no specific agreements were announced following the talks.

The meeting underscores the close ties between Somalia and Kenya and highlights ongoing regional efforts to support stability, political dialogue, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa.
