MOGADISHU — A new global population report shows that Somalia has emerged as one of the fastest-growing countries in terms of population in 2026, highlighting a significant demographic shift with both opportunities and challenges.

According to the data, Somalia’s population has reached approximately 20.3 million, with an annual growth rate of 3.31%. This places the country 4th in Africa among the fastest-growing populations, behind Niger, Angola, and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

However, when it comes to fertility rate—the average number of children per woman—Somalia ranks 2nd in Africa, surpassed only by Niger. This means that while Somalia is 4th in overall growth speed, it is among the highest in birth rates on the continent.

The rapid population increase has also raised Somalia’s global standing. The country is now ranked 66th among the most populous nations in the world, overtaking several countries that were previously ahead.

Globally, India remains the most populous country with about 1.476 billion people, followed by China at around 1.412 billion.

Experts note that Somalia’s fast population growth could become a major driver of economic and social development if well managed. A young and expanding population can support productivity and innovation, but without proper planning, it may also put pressure on essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment.
